In my design the large maroon and yellow community symbol in the center represents the City of Brisbane as well as the people who call the region home, the women are represented by the U symbols with coolamons and digging sticks and the men are represented through the U symbols with spears. Surrounding this community symbol is the Brisbane River which along with the other surrounding rivers, helps to bring life to city. Some of Brisbane’s most iconic locations also surround this community symbol, many of these icons and landmarks draw tourists and travellers into Brisbane, making it a beautiful bustling city, filled with culture, amazing food and events for any and everyone. Some of Brisbane’s most recognised landmarks are The Story Bridge, Brisbane City Hall, The Gallery of Modern Art, St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane’s Skytower, The Shrine of Remembrance, The Wheel of Brisbane and Queensland Performing Arts Center.

The Queensland floral emblem, which is the Cooktown Orchid boarders the design, with the Brolga in the bottom right corner which is the Queensland Bird Emblem, the animal emblem is the Koala and that is in the top right corner. Queensland’s State Colours of Yellow and Maroon have also been highlighted in the piece.

The boomerang, handprints and community symbol in the bottom of the artwork represents the traditional custodians of the region, who have lived on and nurtured the lands for over 65,000 years, as well as the culture, history and connection they have with the Brisbane region. That is where the footprints and journey begins, they lead from the past to present Brisbane City today contemporary, friendly and diverse, the footprints then lead onto a brighter future, represented by the Sun. The travelling lines and community symbols in yellow and white represents people travelling to Brisbane from different communities and regions, large and small, with the outlining colours symbolising the different environments they travel from. The red is the desserts and outback, blue is the coastlines and waterways and green is the bush, rainforests and agricultural lands.

The elements in the background surrounded by yellow and maroon dots symbolise the many methods of transportation and the reasons why people love to travel, whether its by car, sailing boat, or helicopter, a short trip, a well-deserved holiday, or a much needed reunion with family, whether traveling from near or far, from around our beautiful Country or from abroad, everyone has a unique reason to travel and Brisbane accommodates them all, with the dots and lines in the background connecting them all together.
